Bee Keeping

A bee-keepers' cooperative is currently being established in Kwahu-Tafo as a means of generating income for many of the town's unemployed people.

Many people have generously donated bee keeping kits through the excellent and innovative Good Gifts catalogue, which allows you to donate to a specific project in the name of a friend (and what an original and refreshing present to give!). A hive of bees costs just £20, and a whole cooperative can be set up for £250. Thank you all who have bought bee keeping kits for Tafo, we are very excited by the overwhelming response, and hope to add more projects soon - watch this space!

The result: a great jar of honey!

The local plateau climate in Tafo is suitable for bees, which produce a delicious treacly and distinctive honey. The cooperative will sell the honey locally where it is very popular.

The income from beekeeping is sufficient to cover nearly two children's school fees for a year from just one beehive.
