Eye Care in Kwahu-Tafo
A generous donation has enabled Friends of Tafo to provide eye care in Kwahu-Tafo.
A previous initiative by the Kwahu-Tafo Youngsters' Club (a group of enterprising
young people from the town who are interested in organising projects for the good
of the community) led to a visit of a mobile eye clinic to the town. This was
the result of local people contributing time and money, match funded by Friends
of Tafo. The mobile clinic examined 500 patients and established the need for
eye care among the town's population.
The donation of £4000 from the Swedish Bombus Foundation in 2004 has given Friends
of Tafo the great opportunity to address the many issues relating to visual impairment
within the town. We have already been able to send a number of patients to Accra
for examination and consultation following the original visit of the eye clinic.
The funding will also cover the resulting necessary operations for eminently
treatable eye illnesses, and prescription spectacles.
We will also use the funding to cover regular visits by the mobile eye clinic
which will be organised by the Youngsters' Club.
Incurably blind people in Kwahu-Tafo are being offered braille equipment and
classes in order to promote their inclusion in society. There is also the chance
now to send visually impaired children to a school for the blind within the region.

years, needs training and
business start-up support
to replace his former livelihood which was moulding plastic

Further, the donation will be used to fund skills training for the visually impaired
in basket work and weaving. Business support including tools and a loan for materials
purchasing will be included. This will enable these people to earn an income,
enabling them to become more independent.
