Education and Training: over £75,000
We have enabled needy children to go to school, provided exercise books, text
books, resources and second-hand books to all schools, invited overseas Teacher
Trainers to hold in-service workshops, enabled crammer courses for school pupils
during the school holidays, rebuilt classrooms at the Methodist Kindergarten and
Islamic Primary Schools, and rescued the town's Senior Secondary School by renovating
its buildings, adding new ones, enabling sanitation and electricity supply, providing
a computer classroom, and paying professional teachers.
We have also been able to set up income-generating craft training workshops in
the town covering a number of skills. These have included tie & dye, bead-making
and soap-making, bee-keeping, leatherwork, basket weaving and stone carving. We
are now, subject to funding, initiating funding a Business Development Programme, health
awareness, such as HIV/AIDS, project management and planning, numeracy, and teacher
training.
Community and Infrastructure: over £30,000
The community in Kwahu-Tafo has asked for help with maintaining the basic infrastructure
in the town. Friends of Tafo has been able to assist in a number of projects,
including the repair and maintenance of wells, installing washrooms at the Senior
Secondary School, the extension of electricity to schools, the establishment of
a fund for planting trees, extending and running the library. We have extended
the capacity of the Development Council through planning and management workshops.
Culturally, we have run a photographic competition for schools, and with the
help of ie:music, established a Royal Music Academy that provides musical training
(and instruments) as well as orchestras and bands for public events in Kwahu-Tafo.
In addition, we have been able to fund the improvement of the sports facilities
in the town.
Health and Social Services: over £7,000
In addition to training and awareness in relation to HIV/AIDS, we have been able
to fund clinics focussing on diabetes and eye care. Both types of clinic have
been able to provide information on identifying and managing the problems found
in Kwahu-Tafo and, to the extent practical, have provided equipment, treatment
(both medicinal and surgical) or basic prescriptions to alleviate suffering.
Kwahu-Tafo has developed an active association for the disabled community and
we have been able to fund various training workshops for the association and the
construction of ramps to facilitate access into the library and other public buildings.
Computerisation: over £1,500 - plus 415 computers!
With the assistance of 400 computers donated through the Prince's Trust International
Business Leaders Forum, and 15 more from Celador productions, we have been able
to assist Kwahu-Tafo in opening the town's first computer classroom, where daily
training of pupils and townspeople takes place. We are now seeking funding for
a US$258,000 project, with the backing of UNESCO, to place computers in each of
our Junior Secondary schools and to connect the town to the internet. This involves
building or adapting suitable classrooms, establishing the necessary satellite
links and electricity supplies and providing training and classroom equipment
for seven schools.
